About Eco Carrier Bags

With almost every purchase, no matter how small, we are given a plastic carrier bag. Not only in supermarkets (which are probably the greatest source) but also the ad hoc purchases from high street shops (clothes, books, chemists, sandwiches for lunch...). The list is endless.

Eco carrier bag was born as a result of the frustration of seeing plastic carrier bags discarded on our streets, littering our countryside, blocking our drains and strangling and suffocating our wildlife. These bags take between 500 to 1,000 years to break down and when they do, they reduce to a fine powder which contaminates our soil and water.

Most carrier bags have a useful life of approximately 12 minutes. That is the time taken from purchase to taking the goods home. After that they are usually thrown away and are clogging up our landfill sites. Only approximately 3% of carrier bags are actually recycled. Even if you do recycle your plastic bags, it still takes energy in the recycling process.

There must be an alternative.

Reusable bags are the best environmental solution. They are used time and again and if used regularly each reusable bag is estimated to save 1,000 carrier bags. So if everyone carried a reusable bag this would have a dramatic effect on our environment.

The problem we found was that we kept forgetting to take our reusable bag with us when we went shopping. We were fine with our supermarket shop but it was those spur of the moment shopping expeditions which caught us out and we ended up being given a plastic carrier bag.

There must be a simple solution. The problem we found was that the reusable bags were not easy to fit into a pocket or handbag.

The eco carrier bag is the solution. Our handy reusable bag, packs down into a small integral pouch so that it fits easily into a handbag or pocket and is readily available when you need it most.

Our aim is to encourage as many people as possible to carry a reusable bag. We believe that to do this the bags need to be affordable and small enough to carry around every day. They need to fit easily into a pocket or handbag, be easy to pack away and open out. We think we have achieved this with our eco carrier bag.

Some Facts:

  • Every person in the UK uses on average 167 carrier bags a year, that’s about 6 bags a week.

  • Most are used for approximately 12 minutes before being thrown away.

  • Plastic carrier bags take between 500 to 1,000 years to break down in a landfill site.

  • As litter, plastic bags break down into toxic bits polluting our soil, river, lakes and oceans.

  • Production of carrier bags requires vast amounts of oil.

  • Recycling rates for plastic bags are extremely low. Only 1 to 3% of plastic bags end up getting recycled.
